Open Trench (wall piece) the hagstone rocks are really just extra! 😅 (2,026) $$200.00 When Spring Creek was a wide open waterway she meandered as she pleased, providing sustenance and habitat for native flora and fauna, powering mills and irrigating local crops and orchards. Eventually, she became a threat, causing enough destruction that it was decided she had to be contained. A trench was cut, cement and rebar were placed, and Spring Creek was covered. I am struck by how similar this story is to the treatment of women throughout time. When they have behaved most like themselves and taken up “too much” space, they have been censored, silenced, and hidden away. What a joy it is to see Spring Creek open and visible again, appreciated as the wild woman she has always been. My youngest child was 2 when we moved to Springdale and one of my favorite things to do with him was to go to Spring Creek where it runs along Lake Springdale and watch his imagination bloom as the natural world filled his vision and cooled his little feet. Gathering Creek (2,026) $$300.00 Spring Creek is a third space: neither home nor work, neither privately owned nor organized around consumption. It is a place where people gather without necessarily needing a reason to be there. We swim, sit, talk, wander, cool off, bring friends, meet strangers, and return again and again. I think of the creek as a kind of watering hole—not only in the ecological sense, but as a gathering place for people drawn toward similar ways of living. Its banks become temporary social spaces shaped by whoever arrives, where community can form through proximity, repetition, and shared use rather than through transaction. This work considers the creek as a form of social infrastructure: a place that makes certain kinds of relationships possible. In a culture where so much public life has been absorbed into spaces organized around buying something, Spring Creek offers another proposition. The water asks nothing of us in exchange for being there. The work comes from my interest in what becomes possible when people have access to places where they can simply gather, linger, and belong. Creek Wrinkles (2,026) $$100.00 This collage is inspired by a recent experience I had sitting on a rock at Spring Creek. I saw how the rain that starts at the top of the bank runs down in rivulets, forming new trenches through the hard pan, each drop joining one another winding their way to the creek, but that day every crevasse laid dry until our next rain. I was filled with grief, remembering my nephew. I wondered if perhaps I am not carrying those that I’ve lost like little drops waiting to fall, but perhaps they are all carrying me gently like the wrinkles of color on the surface of the creek.
