What the Kingfisher Saw (2018) (not for sale) What the Kingfisher Saw Here is one way that I see God’s love at work in my daily life: each morning as my day begins, I go to my little attic studio that looks out over the back yard. There I sit, contemplate and sing HU. In my work as a quiltmaker, I love to express my creativity with colors and fabrics. I also love nature: flowers, birds, long walks on Spring Creek. When I cross a certain footbridge on the trail where I walk, I hear a sound: tut-tut-tut-tut-tut: it is the Kingfisher! He is elusive, so I sing him a little greeting and keep on walking. We are kindred spirits; we are dressed alike. We both wear black and white and cobalt blue for our outings. Back in my studio, I start a new project. I cut 5″ squares of bright flowers and stretchy them out randomly on the design wall. As I am looking for inspiration, the kingfisher and his song are in my awareness and I decide to use black and white and cobalt blue to sash the flowers together…and soon a quilt is coming together on the wall. It is surprising, even to me, the maker. I walk away from it and come back later to see if the design is working still. A new quilt is becoming…full of God’s love and all the things I love: “what the Kingfisher saw!” I love to imagine that Kingfisher soaring and diving and claiming his creek. I love Spring Creek. Mostly I walk it from Turnbow Park, out to the west; and around Lake Springdale and on towards the Nature Center. I consider it one of Springdale’s finest treasures…for the water, the wildlife, the sounds, the trails, the planting, the people who enjoy their walk or their ride…all of that refreshes me from the inside out. I am delighted to see Spring Creek honored with community art. And I hope to see Spring Creek respected and nurtured by Springdale’s citizens.
