Creek Wrinkles (2,026) $$100.00 This collage is inspired by a recent experience I had sitting on a rock at Spring Creek. I saw how the rain that starts at the top of the bank runs down in rivulets, forming new trenches through the hard pan, each drop joining one another winding their way to the creek, but that day every crevasse laid dry until our next rain. I was filled with grief, remembering my nephew. I wondered if perhaps I am not carrying those that I’ve lost like little drops waiting to fall, but perhaps they are all carrying me gently like the wrinkles of color on the surface of the creek. Environmental Restitution (2,026) $$10,005.00 Earth, air, fire, and creek: represented here not as subject matter, but as equals in the room. For too long we’ve treated the natural world as a backdrop; something to extract from, build on, and take for granted, instead of something to learn from, to commune with. This piece asks us to become students again: to listen to what the land, creek, and air have always been telling us, and to reconnect with a guidance we’ve forgotten how to follow. These four boxes hold what was taken and what remains: dirt from the bank of Spring Creek; water from its current; a box left open to air; and a mark left by fire. What is owed here has no honest price. To pay this price is not to settle a debt, it is to acknowledge one. It’s the one that beckons us to listen: the pitter-patter of rain on leaves, the trickle of a stream over stones, the meditative pull of a fountain in a garden. There’s a particular kind of relief in it too, the refreshment of stepping into a cold spring on a hot day, the way it wakes up your whole body at once. Watershed (2,026) $$1,000.00 A watershed is an area of ridge of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers or basins or an area or region drained by a river or river system. Spring Creek drains to the Illinois River which winds its way through our region. Like circulatory systems in our bodies, creeks, streams, and rivers are vital to the health of our shared landscape. Cutting and piecing paper into a “paper quilt” is analogous to the idea that landscapes are made of individual elements each with their own role in the narrative. This piece, “Watershed,” honors the relationship between the rolling Ozark hills, the stillness found in shallow waters, and the sky above. Leprechaun (Zach) at Rubber Duck race (2,026) $$720.00 This is painted from a photo I took at the first rubber duck race at Spring Creek, downtown Springdale. What a great way to get people together along the creek and raise money the same time. I attended, had purchased a ticket, and was hoping my duck would win. I took some photos and enjoyed a good time. To my surprise, after the race was over the leprechaun came up to me. It was Zach Brothers! I’d know him since he was in first grade. It was great to see him. Spring Creek is in the Illinois River Watershed. The Illinois River Watershed Partnership, frequently organizes cleanups, buffer restorations, and community education events along Spring Creek to protect its water quality. I was an artist-in-residence at the watershed partnership. I also built a cave inside their building using various types of sculpture. I created plants and animals that live inside and outside of caves in Arkansas. Green Heron (2,026) $$770.00 I was Plein Air painting in downtown Springdale with a group of artists, the Plein Air painters of the Ozarks. While walking on the trail, I noticed a bird in Spring Creek. I took some photos of it in the water. Then, it flew and I got a good photo of it flying away. I wanted to paint it because it shows that there is wildlife at the creek and how the green Heron is somewhat camouflaged. Serina Faist’s artwork explores how symbols and color evokes emotion and helps create connection to water, our most precious life-giving resource. Similar to the color of Spring Creek just at before nightfall, the blue color in the artwork signifies transition from evening to night. Creekside Bluffs (2,026) $$150.00 This mixed media piece is built from dryer sheets, sequins, and tree bark to form a layered composition inspired by the limestone bluffs of the Ozarks. Purple, red/coral, and blue/aqua tones reference the shifting light across the bluff faces at dawn and dusk. Sequins reflect the glint of sunlight on wet stone and water below the cliffs. The work uses recycled and repurposed materials to echo the erosion and weathering found in the bluffs themselves.
