Grasses is a drawing of streambank vegetation — the tall stands that grow where water meets land, hold the soil in place, and filter what comes off the ground before it reaches the creek. It is a vital part of a watershed and does much of the work for its preservation.
I drew it in pen and ink, in motion, the whole stand laid over by wind. Grass on a bank is never still; it registers every movement of air the way the creek registers every rain. My own relationship to Spring Creek is mostly this — walking the edges and looking at what grows there.

What is Spring Creek to you?
Spend a week drawing a stand of creek grass and it stops being a plant and becomes a record. Every stalk is bent in the direction of weather that has already passed. Nothing on a bank stands upright for long — what lives there lives by giving way and coming back. The creek rises and falls on a schedule none of the plants agreed to, and they adapted by refusing to be rigid. That is what I have learned from it, and it is why I feel its worth recording.
