Three years ago Northwest Arkansas welcomed us with peaceful steams, mountain views, and shifting botanical hues. The warm earth tones and strokes of vibrant neon paint highlight our adventures of exploring our new terrain. Traditionally, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird symbolizes joy, vitality, and living in the present moment. While, the Cardinal flower commonly represents protection as the name references the bright red robes worn by Roman Catholic cardinals. Both species are native to Northwest Arkansas. Ozark Technicolor I (2,026) $$400.00 Ozark Technicolor reimagines the hills of the land I live on and paint from daily, in saturated pink, chartreuse, and gold. Water runs through the entire Ozarks like a nervous system — creeks and trails threading through cities, open space, and everything between, connecting places that might otherwise feel separate. Spring Creek, and the trail that follows it from Springdale’s urban heart out into open, tree-marked country, is part of that same continuous system. My work isn’t about rendering what the land looks like, but what it feels like to move through it: how psyche and place are tangled together, each shaping the other. The heightened, kid-core palette is my way of being honest about that feeling; a little more vivid, a little more alive than a photograph would allow. This piece is an invitation to see the Ozarks, and the water that stitches it together, not as scenery but as something we’re all, quietly, made of. Beyond the Bend (2,026) $$305.00 This painting was inspired by a view of Spring Creek from the 112 bridge near Elm Springs, while traveling between Fayetteville and Bentonville. At this spot, I found myself thinking beyond what is immediately visible and wondering: What’s just around the bend? What’s on the other side of the hill? What’s across the field? Those questions carry over into my studio and became part of the way I approach painting. I wanted to create a sense of passage through the landscape—a feeling of moving into and through a place even as the viewer is physically still. I’m interested in the way one field softens and slips into another and how a landscape can become an experience of movement. I allow colors and lines to flow, overlap, and change direction, following the rhythms I see in water, land, and light. Geometry gives those movements structure, while color creates energy. The paths and shifting fields invite the viewer forward, toward what might be just beyond the next turn. Leslie Coston Fayetteville, Arkansas Painting What is Spring Creek to you? For the past four years, I’ve been driving frequently from Fayetteville to Bentonville on Highway 112 to visit my dad. One of my favorite parts of the journey has been crossing Spring Creek just outside of Elm Springs. Over the years, I’ve watched the creek and surrounding landscape through multiple seasons and weather conditions.
