My daughter and I have been walking the Spring Creek trail since she was in my womb. She has had so many firsts by the creek. Learning to walk, seeing her first monarch, watching her first sunset. The Wader (2,025) $$200.00 I grew up in southwest Missouri at the confluence of the James and Finley rivers. Much of my childhood was spent swimming in the river, fishing , and canoeing. While I love to think that it is pure instinct or my love for the small waterways of the Ozark’s is innate, I think much of my love comes from watching and having so many memories of my friends and family by the water. This is what this piece is about for me. Much like the heron I have so many memories of wading in the water and experiencing the world through a lens of wonder. Who knows how many rocks I’ve flipped looking for crawdads or how many fish I have caught from the rivers? While I do not live in the water, I cannot imagine what my life would be like without the rivers and creeks that have wound their way through my memories. While it still retains its more rural areas, it is a creek that a suburban area can access and enjoy freely. To me Spring Creek is a thread that equalizes and connects so much of NWA. Leprechaun (Zach) at Rubber Duck race (2,026) $$720.00 This is painted from a photo I took at the first rubber duck race at Spring Creek, downtown Springdale. What a great way to get people together along the creek and raise money the same time. I attended, had purchased a ticket, and was hoping my duck would win. I took some photos and enjoyed a good time. To my surprise, after the race was over the leprechaun came up to me. It was Zach Brothers! I’d know him since he was in first grade. It was great to see him. I created plants and animals that live inside and outside of caves in Arkansas. Green Heron (2,026) $$770.00 I was Plein Air painting in downtown Springdale with a group of artists, the Plein Air painters of the Ozarks. While walking on the trail, I noticed a bird in Spring Creek. I took some photos of it in the water. Then, it flew and I got a good photo of it flying away. I wanted to paint it because it shows that there is wildlife at the creek and how the green Heron is somewhat camouflaged. Because of this, herons have become one of my favorite animals because they look so majestic at the creek, whether they are taking a break or on the hunt. Grasses (2,025) $$550.00 Grasses is a drawing of streambank vegetation — the tall stands that grow where water meets land, hold the soil in place, and filter what comes off the ground before it reaches the creek. It is a vital part of a watershed and does much of the work for its preservation. I drew it in pen and ink, in motion, the whole stand laid over by wind. Grass on a bank is never still; it registers every movement of air the way the creek registers every rain. My own relationship to Spring Creek is mostly this — walking the edges and looking at what grows there. Spend a week drawing a stand of creek grass and it stops being a plant and becomes a record. Every stalk is bent in the direction of weather that has already passed. Nothing on a bank stands upright for long — what lives there lives by giving way and coming back. The creek rises and falls on a schedule none of the plants agreed to, and they adapted by refusing to be rigid.
